Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore the Mayfair district with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Mayfair's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Mayfair, in the City of Westminster, is bounded to the west by Park Lane, Oxford Street to the north, Regent Street to the east and Piccadilly to the south. It is named after the annual two week long May Fair that moved from Haymarket in 1686, and moved on to Bow in 1764. Take this walk and visit the famous Squares of Hanover, Grosvenor and Berkeley. Admire the grand architecture, gaze at the luxury of countless Rolls Royces, five-star hotels and refined shops, and enjoy the open spaces, richness of history and the hustle and bustle of a truly unique and sumptuous area of London.

Curious About... Mayfair

  • An exploration of the Mayfair district with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the town's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Mayfair in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the town - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Hanover Square to Berkeley Square - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms

From the high-class chic shops which abound, to fashionable eateries, gentlemen’s clubs and some of London’s most exclusive hotels such as The Connaught and Claridge’s. Admire the splendid Squares, gorgeous gardens and noble residences, but most of all absorb the atmosphere of a truly unique area of central London.

2. Berkeley Square to The Ritz - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
This walk has a more inclusive feel as you explore the south west area of Mayfair. From the relaxed Berkeley Square where ‘a nightingale sang’, past small shops and exotic embassies, to the area where the May Fair was once held every year. Here you’ll find a profusion of distinctive restaurants, shops and places to have a drink before you arrive at sleepless Piccadilly, and the luxury and elegance of The Ritz Hotel.
